Wehkamp’s mission is simple: to make the lives of all families in the Netherlands more beautiful and easier.
In 1952 Herman Wehkamp was in charge of a few of his parents’ shops in the northeast of the Netherlands. The shops ran well and were a household name in the region, but Herman wanted more. He wanted a longer reach. He read about mail order companies in America and got the idea to do the same in the Netherlands. Few people trusted it, but his mother gave him one chance to try. With a loan from his mother, Herman bought a stack of mattresses and invested a thousand guilders in advertising costs. It was a great success. Herman collected the advertisements in a catalog in 1955. That caught on and in the years that followed the iconic Wehkamp catalog became a household name. In 1995, Wehkamp was one of the first companies in the Netherlands to partly go online and in 2010 the company switched completely. Today, Wehkamp is the online department store for families and more than half of the customers do mobile shopping.
